Say its a gaffe, Raffy.

Yeah I know how its pronounced.

Today was a dark day for baseball. I can’t say I’ve ever really been a fan of Rafael Palmeiro but I was always aware of the name. The face. He’s always put up solid numbers. And when he became only the fourth man to have 500 homeruns and 3000 hits just two weeks ago, I was proud of him. There was always a respect.

When he was mentioned in Jose Canseco’s book, Juiced : Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big…. it didn’t seem right. He always seemed to be a class act. When he testified in front of Congress, he was the only one you really truly believed.

Well today, Baltimore Orioles first basemen Raffy Palmeiro was caught using steroids. He claims he didn’t knowingly ingest the “illegal substance” as its called, and you almost want to believe him. But there are too many coincidences. He’s been suspended for 10 days because this is only his first offense. Raffy maybe had another year in him but that was it. He was probably going to the Hall of Fame. Not likely anymore. I’m sure it’ll be a Rosian debate. What a way to fall from grace. Is there a Cuban saying “If you’re gonna go down, do it big”? Must have read that somewhere.

This is an unfortunate situation for Major League Baseball. The only good that can come of this is that it will hopefully scare everyone into stopping steroid use. Nobody wants to question records. We want to watch as our heros shatter them. Through either gross negligence or willing participation, Raffy let a bunch of people down today.

Canseco is having a field day with this.
