Back in 1924, futurists had designs for a radio-controlled robot police force. It’s odd to me that police robots were never pursued in any large capacity. Seems like a perfect use for a robot. A robo… cop. Give me a radio-controlled police tank or something, anything. They have autonomous killer planes in the military, but nothing to help John Q. Law fight crime on a daily basis.

Check out the chilling insert illustration of the robots in full riot control mode. Those rioters really look frightened. As they should be. Unless of course those are just people waiting in line at the Hoagy Carmichael show. Hulking police robots, with a spinning mace for a hand, would never overreact would they?

Something that got missed this week during Palin’s Going Rouge-mania and the premiere of some vampire movie for tweens… In a landmark bill, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, becomes the “most important anti-discrimination law passed in the last two decades.” The law will ban employers from administering genetic testing on their employees (in most cases). Now you can’t be let go if you have a heart condition that’s not currently acting up. Score one for the privately sick.

This law goes a way toward preventing a society based on liberal eugenics, as explored in the 1997 future-noir film Gattaca, but is it enough? As our mastery of the human genome increases, it seems only logical that improvements to our fragile frames will occur. In that film, humans are “fixed” at birth. Any inconsistencies you have as an embryo are whittled out- babies lucky enough to have parents with means are given the best possible start. An underclass is created. The haves and the have-nots compete for the same jobs. It’s easy to see who wins.

This is not called the Gattaca Law. It is not meant to address such an outcome, but it is a precedent that needed to be set. Widespread genetic engineering is coming and I wonder if we’re prepared for the consequences. What happens if it is not available to all?

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/16/business/16genes.html

So October votes are in and you guys seem pretty defiant in your feelings toward Roman Polanski and how he should be punished. 46% of you voted for rapid rehab. Favoring a month of staring at reality TV shows with his eyes pried open. While another 43% wanted to put him away. The remaining 11% feel he should be given a pass. I suppose with a combined 89% of people supporting some kind of punishment for the auteur, this is a not as big an issue as you’d think by the media coverage. The United States has officially asked the Swiss government to extradite Polanski, so we’ll see soon enough what happens to him. It’s going to be tough to get a fair hearing when this is all said and done.

I was really happy to see that the vote total nearly doubled in October, only the second month of Miabi Polls. Encouraging! Keep coming back. This poll and all others can still be voted on in the Past Polls section.

These are real honest to god pirates…Not some scene from The Life Aquatic.

Well take that pirates! This is America! I was absolutely delighted to see this story when I woke up today. Apparently some Somali pirates (they all seem to be from Somalia) attempted to hijack a US. cruise liner in dangerous waters off the coast of Yemen. What the ship was doing there is beyond me. Luckily, the pleasure cruise captain managed to outrun the bad guys, even while taking fire. So cool! I’m fairly certain some bloated Americans aboard thought it was a really good re-enactment of Pirates of the Carribean, The Ride.

Next year’s Talk Like A Pirate Day is gonna be awesome.

Arrrrrrrrrrr.

You can’t make this stuff up. Apparently, the city of….. Batman, Turkey is suing Christoper Nolan and Warner Bros. over the use of the Batman name. They are alleging that the success of The Dark Knight is responsible for a series of unsolved murders and has caused an increase in suicide among women in town. Which all seems like an afterthought since the jerk-off mayor, Huseyin Kalkan, is quoted as saying…

“There is only one Batman in the world, The American producers used the name of our city without informing us.”

A little late for that pal. Like almost 70 years too late you dink. See if our favorite orphan will rid your city of scum now. No, they are not saying there are copycat Joker crimes. Or anything directly related to any Batman plots. Because they for some reason named their town Batman, they think they are now entitled to cash. All this is is a disgusting money grab. Batman, Turkey should be ashamed of itself.

Read on MSNBC.com

Please someone tell me this is a hoax and restore my faith in humanity.

Have important documents but not the space to store them? Can’t afford a paper shredder? Do prowlers go through your trash at night? Rummaging through your table scraps and Q-tips? Try this handy tip next time you need to throw out those old bank statements. Drop some used condoms on top of the trash bag that contains your files. Everyone is grossed out by used condoms.

Don’t have used condoms? Try balloons and shampoo. That should create the proper illuuuusion to thwart any would-be thieves. Sleep better knowing your important papers are securely tucked away under birth control. Used condoms could be the solution to the growing identity theft problem in this country. Learn to protect yourself.
