I’m here, urging you to check out The One & Nines. They are simply fantastic. They are so good it makes me angry. There’s this incredibly soulful R&B throwback sound. The stench of authenticity. The musicians hit all the right notes and Vera has the kind of voice that will make you fall in love. They’ve been playing around Jersey City for a few years now and I’m constantly urging them to take the show on the road. Or at least on the PATH. This band needs to introduce itself to the trend setters and taste makers of this here NYC. As it happens, they’ve finally done some recording and recently released a 6-song EP. You can buy it from them directly or grab it off iTunes.
But don’t take my word for it. See for yourself how good they are. And definitely get your ass to one of their shows, prepared to shake. Even if it’s in Jersey.
A movie review? Well because of a case of the Swine, I got a chance to watch the film Paper Heart today. Kind of hard to pin down exactly what kind of movie this is, but I can report that it was quite charming. It’s part scripted romantic comedy and part documentary. The filmmakers have been calling it a “hybrid documentary”. I’m calling it a “romantic comedy”. And though I’d hardly claim to be an aficionado, I’ll say that it was my second favorite rom-com of the year, behind (500) Days.
It stars Micheal Cera and Charlyne Yi in a fictional romance that is supplemented by true documentary material as Charlyne travels around the country to discover the true meaning of love. The lines between fiction and reality are blurred as the narrative gets all twisted up and becomes more about the movie itself than anything else. At its heart though, is a cute (and yes, awkward) little romance between the two stars which ultimately keeps it from unraveling. The hybrid nature of this film, along with the very meta aspects of Charlyne and Michael playing themselves in a movie about their blossoming romance was also quite appealing given the reality TV and youTube-obsessed world we live in.
Even though this is one of the 150 movies Cera was in last year and he’s become a huge star, this is most definitely Chuck’s movie. Ms. Yi is a multi-talented writer, musician, comedienne, artist who along with Nick Jasenovec, was the driving force behind Paper Heart. She also co-wrote the screenplay and most of the music. Not too mention, she’s so adorable. Rent it on Netflix.
Of the highlights of the film was the music. Music, she collaborated with Michael Cera and others on. The most beautiful track in my opinion is Magic Perfume. Charlyne and Prefix Magazine had a Magic Perfume cover contest back in August for which you can check out the entries here.
The winning entry is quite good….
But I think I prefer this particular entry that did not win. Love those drums….
I wish a came up with this. This is the music video for Oi Va Voi’s “Everytime”. It is done in stop-motion using shredded still frames. Or so it seems. Great song. Alternative Electronic Jewish Music! Pretty neat effect!
Awesome songs. Awesomer video. This haunting and beautiful animation was created by Emmanuel Ho for the Austin band I love You but I’ve Chosen Darkness. However, some genius editor revisualized the video for the song “Arcadia” by Apparat. Both videos are pretty terrifying but I think I prefer the new “Arcadia” version better. The music fits the animation perfectly. I hope Emmanuel doesn’t mind me saying this. The animation speaks for itself. It’s really amazing.
Which one do you like better?
Apparat – Arcadia (Video Remix)
The Owl – I Love You but I’ve Chosen Darkness (The original)
Bon Jovi makes me gag. They are essentially jingle writers at this point. They’ll sell their music to whoever will pay them. Not that they had any credibility to begin with. But there truly is nothing redeeming left for this band. Disgusting. Even being born in Jersey, I always thought they were a bunch of pansies. Even that! I always knew they were Springsteen-lite. Sure, I thought they had a few catchy songs. I sing Prayer with the rest of you at every wedding I go to. But I always kept my distance. They are salt-water taffy. Candy. No edge. None. The Boss had more edge in his back pocket on the cover of Born in the U.S.A. than this band. Shit. Poison had triple the edge of Bon Jovi. I know, because I was into Poison.
Bon Jovi is a carefully constructed business. Not a band. A dinosaur of 80′s hair rock (nothing metal about it) that has somehow lasted by following that formula. The fact that Bon Jovi are still around writing jingles for MLB or selling out to television networks makes my stomach twirl. This is a band that is not interested in rediscovering it’s glory days in the slightest. They like their watered-down schlock-rock just the way it is now.
I suspect members of the band would agree with me on most points. They’ll tell you straight up that its a business.
Bullets are mesmerizing. Especially in slow-mo. Found this on Kottke.org. 10 minutes of bullets shot at things and set to trance music. Captured at 1,000,000 frames per second. I bet you watch the whole thing.
