I was a little disappointed last week when I couldn’t get my act together in time to go to SXSW. Even though my bosses said they’d pay for it. None of us really knew about the interactive portion of the annual conference. I thought it was a film festival with good music! I have always wanted to see Austin and the interactive portion kind of hit the big time this year. At least in my eyes. The sessions offered where really cool and totally what I’m in to. I picked the ones I wanted to go to, wrote up what I was going to get out of it and handed it in to my boss. Then I downloaded the official SXSW iphone apps and waited. But alas, I got the go ahead on a monday and had to leave that thursday. So I made a game-time decision to skip it this year. You can bet I’ll have my glasses and tight jeans ready for next year.

But had I gone, I would have been met with this sign from a local bar that wasn’t too thrilled by the unusually high traffic.
Good riddance SxSWers

This is hilarious, though I have to disagree with Kimmel on some of his moves as president.

Howdy folks. Wanted to clue you in to something I’ve been working on lately. Recently, I executive produced a new web series for WeddingCentral.com. Wedding Central is the sister network of WE tv and has positioned itself as all wedding programming, all the time. We had a few bucks lying around at the end of 2009 and decided to do an original online series as a companion to the network.

Bridal Breakdown is what came out of it. And what better way to be a dude at a women’s network then by creating a bridal prank show? Essentially, Punk’d for brides. We told these women they were being filmed for a documentary on weddings in NY, but as the cameras rolled, we rolled in our pranksters to wreak havoc on these unsuspecting brides. The wedding industry is big business and many women these days take themselves a little too seriously when it comes to the big day. I think BB works as a light-hearted approach to taking a step back and realizing this is a time to celebrate, not be a bridezilla. Yeah right! Messing with people is just too much fun. Pranking a bride isn’t THAT mean is it?

The show went live on Monday, February 8th. It’s gotten a little press here and there. But today we were picked up by Entertainment Tonight for a special segment to air tonight at 7:30pm on CBS, with possibly maybe others in the coming weeks. That’s pretty cool for a web only show! Mary Hart might be talkin’ ’bout our show. Mary Friggin’ Hart. She’s been doin’ this since ’82.

You can watch the first episode below. We’ll release one each Monday on WeddingCentral.com for the next six weeks. Try not to cringe too much. Enjoy!

I just heard about this awesome awesome project called Star Wars: Uncut. I am mesmerized by this concept. They’ve divided Star Wars: A New Hope into 15 second clips and organized them on their website. You go on the site and “claim” an open scene. Then go off on your own and film a reenactment of that scene any way you want. I’ve seen a lot of stop-motion stuff, straight up animation. recreations in backyards. Whatever you want. However you’d like to re-imagine your favorite scene. Once you’re done, you submit it to them and at the end of the project they’ll stitch the whole thing together to create a completely fan-made remake of Star Wars. I find this cool on so many levels that don’t even have to do with Star Wars. The internet allows hundreds of fans from around the world to collaborate on a project without ever speaking to one and other. Check out the site for yourself and watch the trailer below. Incredible. And there are so many other movies they can try this with.

Found this really entertaining gallery of photorealistic art over at weburbanist. Some of these pictures are really amazing. I especially enjoyed the Diego Gravinese stuff. Love his choice of subjects and the palette he uses.

One picture in particular boggles my mind though. The picture below by artist Dru Blair is incredible. That is a digital painting folks. It’s hard to wrap your head around. Because of it’s realism, the image of a model named Tica is surrounded by controversy on the web. Even with pictures documenting the whole process.

This is a painting.

Nothing gets people updating their Facebook status like celebrity death.

This summer we’ve had a lot to be updating about. With MJ and Farrah kicking things off in June, there was an outpouring of grief and 80′s nostalgia in my news feed for a week. A few days later, pitchman Billy Mays went to the great infomercial in the sky. A man that was only given a second thought when someone was making fun of his screaming or ridiculous beard, was suddenly being deified on the site. “RIP Billy.” “Billy, you’ll always be an infomercial in my heart.” Look, I hate death like everyone else who is alive, but he wasn’t Willy Mays. He was the “OxiClean Guy” until he died. I’ll miss him as much as I miss those stains. Yes, there was probably a certain amount of irony to the anguish so soon after Michael Jackson died. And that’s just wrong too.

In July, a few sports deaths resonated with my Facebook friends. I found out Steve McNair and Arturo Gatti both kicked the bucket through status updates. Perhaps the scandalous nature of both deaths lead to more heartache?

August saw the loss of John Hughes. The amount of status updates reached a feverish pitch. People of my demographic were melancholy by the passing of the man who made Saturday detention exciting. Understandable. This man brought joy to a generation and at times seemed as though he was reading our thoughts. However, instead of re-watching Weird Science and reflecting in our own way like before, we’re now grieving live and in living color online.

Sprinkled in among the bigger names were the niche deaths. The people that died that only a few people knew or cared about. The people you mourn to show others that you knew who they were. It doesn’t matter who dies. When they do, they’ll be mourned at the world’s biggest social gathering.

Yesterday, Patrick Swayze went to the roadhouse in a cloud after battling PC for two years. A stream of Dirty Dancing references flooded my Facebook feed. Swayze was a hero for shedding light on such a deadly disease, but most people knew him as the bad actor that taught Jennifer Grey’s nose how to dance.

Twitter and Facebook have given us the ability to inform millions of our innermost thoughts and it seems to have lead to an over-sentimentality revolution. Sure, make the case that it was always there. That this country is a caring and solemn crew. That these status updates are celebratory and not mournful. But I believe there are other forces at work. Maybe it’s cynical or heartless, but I think it may simply give us something to talk about. Maybe I need to change with the times. Maybe I’m just an asshole.

Spam. We all deal with it. No matter how inconspicuous you try to be, spam will find a way to you. No matter how good your spam filters are, some will get through. It ranks right up there with miabifilms.com and pop-ups as the most annoying things on the internet.

Half of all the spam I get goes toward penis enlargement. The other half is split up among online drug stores, phishing scams, and fundraising requests from the alumni association. Admittedly, that last one may not be spam. Depending on your definition. Spam, however, does offer a lot of opportunities for humor.

Here is a recent spam headline I found hilarious:

Fornicate like a Macho!

Post some of your favorite spam headlines and lets go spamming the world!
